Mike Waugh
Member, Senate of Pennsylvania
28th District, York County
Mike Waugh began his career in public service at the community level
as both an elective official and an active volunteer. He has brought
those experiences, along with his hands-on approach and working
knowledge of private enterprise, to his duties in Harrisburg.
He was first elected to serve as Senator for the citizens of York
County in the 28th Senatorial District in November of 1998. Prior to
being elected to the State Senate, he served in the State House of
Representatives for six years beginning in November 1992.
Before being elected to the General Assembly, Mike was a managing
partner of his family’s business, Waugh Construction Company. Starting
at the age of 15, he served his local community as an active volunteer
firefighter and EMT and served as assistant fire chief with the
Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company for 12 years from 1981-1993.
Before being elected to state office, Mike was elected as a township
supervisor in Shrewsbury Township from 1989-1992. He served as
vice-president of the York County Association of Townships of the Second
Class. Mike is a longtime member and past chair of the York County
Transportation Coalition. He is also a member of Shrewsbury Lodge No.
423 F. & A.M.
Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Future Farmers
of America (FFA) Foundation, the Farm Show Commission, and the
Chesapeake Bay Commission. He is a member of the Spanish American
Center Advisory Board, as well as the York County Farm Bureau. In
addition he is a member of the York County Fire Chiefs & Firefighters
Association, the NRA, the Pennsylvania Percheron Association, and the
Pennsylvania Draft Horse & Mule Association, to name a few.
During the 2007-2008 legislative session, Mike is serving in Senate
leadership as Republican Caucus Chairman. He is also serving as Vice
Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, as well as a
majority member of the Appropriations, Local Government, Urban Affairs
and Housing and Veterans’ Affairs and Emergency Preparedness
Committees. He is co-chair of the Fire and Emergency Services Caucus.
Born in York, Pennsylvania on December 17, 1955 Waugh graduated from
Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 1974 and attended the
Pennsylvania State University, York campus. He and his wife Wanda have
one son, Joseph, and reside at Glen Ridge Farm in Shrewsbury Township,
York County. They enjoy raising, training, and driving their Percheron
draft horses in competitive events including the State Farm Show.
